It's Like Having A Mechanic At Your Side
When Looking For a Used Car

Step 7: Search For Recalls

With the information you have gathered in the previous steps in hand, click here to find a link to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to find out if the automobile model you are interested in has had any recalls. You can also call 1-800-424-9393. When you call or at the web site, you must have the year make and model on hand. If the automobile you are interested in has been included in any recalls, make sure the repairs were made. To do this, call the dealer or the manufacturer's regional office. You will have to supply them with the Vehicle Identification Number (see VIN, Step 6). If the work has not been done, a dealer will do it at no charge no matter how long it has been since the recall.

Manufacturers often issue voluntary recalls for repairs or adjustments. Call a dealer or regional office to see if the used car, truck, van or SUV you are interested in is eligible for any of these services.
